The United States tentatively endorsed on Monday a call for early elections by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, a gamble he took to try to remove the Hamas government elected less than a year ago.

At the same time, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the Bush administration is trying to sell its plan to Congress to shore up security forces loyal to Abbas with money for salaries, training and logistical support.

McCormack also said it was unclear whether Abbas acted constitutionally in calling new presidential and parliamentary balloting as a way out of a violent confrontation between his Fatah movement and Hamas. He said Monday the vote could be within a few months, years ahead of schedule.

"My understanding of this is that - within the basic law - that this is not prohibited," McCormack said. "It's not specifically accounted for, but it's not prohibited."

Abbas' election suggestion on Saturday prompted demonstrations by thousands of Hamas supporters in the Gaza Strip and clashes between the two political camps that continued through Monday in a slew of kidnappings and violence.

"President Abbas is doing what he can, taking the steps that he thinks are prudent, to try to resolve this situation," McCormack said at his daily news briefing.

"He understands that the will of the Palestinian people is that they don't want to see the current situation continue. So he is taking steps that he believes are within his authority to try to resolve the political impasse."

Hamas overwhelmingly won democratic elections last January. The United States and other countries immediately severed all but humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, based on the militants' continued refusal to disavow terror, recognize Israel and accept Fatah agreements with the Jewish state under Yasser Arafat and Abbas.

"We support President Abbas in trying to work through this current impasse, and we certainly hope that the steps that he is taking can lead to a reduction in the violence," McCormack said Monday.

"It's sad to see some of the innocent lives being lost as a collateral effect of the political impasse that you see right now. So hopefully some of the steps that he is taking can lead to a breaking of that impasse and hopefully a calming of the situation in the Gaza," he said.

This is further proof that America has not a clue about how the Middle East works and it is also proof of the hypocrisy of America's policies in the Middle East.

George Bush if you remember adopted the ideas of Natan Sharansky on democracy in the Middle East, ideas which were flawed since they failed to understand the culture of the Middle East.

So America pushed for elections among the Palestinians and the result was the Palestinians voted in mass for Hamas. Now America seeks to over turn an election in an effort to get their puppet back in power. America thinks that Abbas their puppet will bring peace and a two State solution to end the war of Israel's survival.

This will only back fire on America, when America seeks once again give weapons and training to Fatah members as an effort to back Abbas we will see within days the weapons and training will be used to murder Jews.

When President Clinton did this we could, maybe excuse Clinton since this was the first time America invested in weapons and training in an attempt to strengthen Fatah against Hamas and Islamic Jihad. This is due to the Arabist in the State Department living the lie that Fatah wants peace and a two State solution rather than the destruction of Israel. The weapons and training was within days used to shoot .50 cal. sniper rifles into Jerusalem. The .50 cal rifles are so powerful that they can shoot though the cement walls of homes and apartment buildings plus though tank armor.

So now we have President George Bush walking down the same road and are asking Congress to approve funds for weapons and training. I want to be very clear about this; if America gives weapons to the Palestinians then George Bush will be guilty of the murder of the Jews that will as sure take place as the sun will come up over Jerusalem at the start of each day.

Lastly this move by America to back Abbas will result in terrorism against Israel by Hamas to prove that they are not part of the puppet regime of Abbas.
