Olmert Will Support Ashkenazi Appointment 03:21 Jan 22, '07 / 3 Shevat 5767(IsraelNN.com) The Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, will not oppose Defense Minister's Peretz's decision to appoint Maj. Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi IDF Chief of General Staff, sources close to Olmert said Sunday night. "In most of the consultations the Prime Minister held, Ashkenazi was recommended. He is definitely a worthy candidate," said Olmert confidantes.
"We will have a Chief of General Staff by the weekend," they added.
Olmert and Peretz will meet Monday and finalize the appointment. "They will meet tomorrow and things will be agreed upon," said an Olmert confidante.
We now have a great man as the next Chief of Staff.
His biggest problem will be fighting through the resistance from the Knesset on doing what needs to be done.
