The leader of the Islamic Movement's Northern Front, Sheikh Raed Salah was arrested on Wednesday, along with one of his followers, for flying PLO and Syrian flags at a protest in Jerusalem's Wadi Joz.Border Police and Jerusalem police forces detained the two on suspicion of incitement.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the demonstration of some 40 people lacked a legal permit. Police dispersed the protesters using stun grenades and tear gas.
Three policemen were lightly injured, Rosenfeld said. The Arabic TV network Al-Jazeera said one of its cameramen was lightly injured by a stun grenade.
Salah and the other man were taken to the Shalem station on Salah Ad-Din St. in Jerusalem.
The Islamic Movement head was indicted last month along with several of his followers on similar charges, following a scuffle with police during a protest of the Mughrabi Gate construction work near the Temple Mount.
After his February arrest, Salah was served with a restraining order last month barring him from coming within 60 meters of the Old City walls.
The Islamic leader has been one of the more vocal opponents of the controversial Mughrabi archaeological dig, calling for a third intifada and encouraging violence against Israel.
In 2003, Israel jailed Salah for more than two years, saying his organization had funneled money to Hamas.
