True Face of Israeli "Democracy"
Nadia Matar to Face Charges(IsraelNN.com) Nadia Matar, co-chairwoman of Women in Green, will face charges of insulting a public servant, the Jerusalem District Court decided Thursday. The court overturned an earlier ruling by the Magistrates Court, according to which charges against Matar would be dropped.
Matar was accused of insulting a public servant after calling Disengagement Authority (Sela) head Yonaton Bassi “a modern-day version of the Judenrat.” Matar has argued that other activists and politicians have used similar language without facing charges.
How can Israeli call itself a free democracy when under the Sharon government it enacted this law making it against the law to insult a government official. The problem is that compared to where the majority of Israelis came from i.e. Arab countries or the former Soviet Union Israel feels free in comparison to where these Jews came from.
This does not however mean that Israel have the same freedoms as Americans have in America
