Border policemen shot and killed a suspected Palestinian attacker who approached them at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Wednesday night.

However, sappers who arrived at the scene to check whether the man was carrying a bomb or a weapon discovered the he was unarmed.

From the initial inquiry it emerged that the Palestinian arrived at a security post near the Muslim side of the cave and aroused the suspicions of the border policemen there.

After refusing to be searched, he fled toward other Border Police forces at a different post.

The border policemen there called on him to stop, and when he refused to heed their calls, they shot him. A border policeman was lightly wounded by shrapnel and was evacuated to Jerusalem's Sha'are Tzedek Hospital.

The cave was declared a closed military zone and worshipers were told to vacate the site.
