Abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit's father, Noam Shalit, along with Ya'ara Winkler, the girlfriend of Gilad's brother Yoel, traveled to New York this week to meet with representatives from various countries as well as top U.N.officials.
"The timing of the visit corresponds to the Palestinian bid for statehood, likely to be recognized, as well as the [Palestinian's proposed] membership in the U.N.," Noam Shalit said on Tuesday. "Gilad continues to be held in captivity. He has been a hostage for the past five years, and the fact that the Palestinian entity uses him as a bargaining chip and for blackmail is a clear violation of international law. This directly contradicts their request for international recognition."
