Comptroller to probe Israel gun laws

Special inquiry to look into gun control regulations following recent incidents involving security guards who murdered their wives, as well as Newtown massacre
Tova Tzimuki

State Comptroller Yosef Shapira is planning to conduct a special inquiry into Israel's gun control regulations following recent incidents involving security guards who murdered their wives – as well as the massacre of children in Newtown, Connecticut.

The inquiry will focus on the Ministry of Public Security, which is responsible for the supervision of firearm licensing and security companies authorized to posses weapons and hand them over to their employees.

The comptroller will examine whether licenses to carry weapons are granted in accordance with the law.

As for security companies, the comptroller will probe whether they meet the terms of the law for obtaining large amounts of weapons and supervise the guns after they are transferred to the employees.

State comptrollers have already looked into the Israel's gun control regulations in the past, and public committees have been appointed to suggest improvements in the licensing and supervision of weapons. Shapira will examine whether such a follow-up had indeed taken place.

In addition, the report will deal with the desired policy for the possession of weapons by individuals and for monitoring license holders' use of their guns.
